Australian law enforcement has seized an alleged Chinese hacker from northern New South Wales.

Chen Guangyu is also suspected of breaking into private computers at the Chinese diplomatic compound at Sydney's Royal Australian Legion.

Authorities said their search for Chen was not linked to the Chinese government.

"He may have had access to sensitive government computer systems as a consequence of his presence within the Chinese nationalities," the police said in a statement.

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop told ABC's Lateline on Thursday she was "very concerned" by the alleged hack.

"I've called the Chinese foreign ministry, but we are not going to comment about this until we've been able to get the details to the Chinese side," she said.

Ms Bishop added that the United States and other countries could take action to help with the arrest of Mr Chen.

"Our thoughts and efforts are with the Chinese people, including the Chinese people's security forces, and we urge all our international partners to exercise restraint and caution," she said.

"The United States is a close ally and friend and we are asking them to exercise restraint in terms of their actions."

The Australian Government has set up a task force to investigate the suspected breaches and said the Chinese are taking necessary measures to ensure the safety of its nationals.

The FBI said that Mr Chen is being "scofflawed" over his alleged role in the hacking and was unlikely to be able to go forward with the case in court.

"He is not likely to be able to challenge the outcome," a senior law enforcement source told Lateline.

"The question is what has he done to justify this intrusion?"
